Hidden Degeneration

Have you ever noticed how some people seem to not age? Despite a standard American diet and other poor habits, they look great and seem to feel great for a long time. Then suddenly, they turn a corner and age very quickly.

Through the process of homeostasis, the body is always striving to maintain balance. It will do so even at risk to itself. For example, when enough nutrients aren’t available, the body will “steal from Peter to pay Paul”.  For example, when we don’t have enough calcium to keep our heart pumping (a high priority), the body may take calcium from the bones (strong bones being a lesser priority than keeping our heart pumping).

When we take in too much indigestible junk food or too many environmental toxins, the body will store this toxic waste until it has a chance to dump it. If we don’t nourish ourselves and allow for regular cleansing and detoxification, eventually there will be a tipping point. No one goes to bed healthy and wakes up with a dreaded disease. Most disease starts with dis-ease - slowly and quietly - and over time becomes disease. The natural, life-sustaining cycle is to cleanse/detoxify and nourish. Many who have experienced dis-ease and disease have made “miraculous” recoveries by simply following this cycle. The more intense the dis-ease, the stronger one’s commitment to natural living should be. All the greatest health teachers throughout history have taught that as long as one has a pulse, there is hope for a full recovery. While it is never too late to take good care of yourself, save yourself unnecessary wear and tear and start today.

Looking for the Magic Bullet

We often look for that one thing – that herb or nutrient - that will turn everything around – and indeed, nutritional deficiency is rampant in our society. Try this experiment. For just one day, eliminate all the energy drains - every junk food/drink, worry, self-doubt, superfluous television shows, constant e-mail checking, etc. (you know the ones). Sometimes, what we have is already enough.

Forget the Calories (Focus on the Food Value)

All calories are not created equally. Look instead at protein, carbs, fats, sugars, fiber, anti-oxidants, freshness, etc. Recommendations for eating snack foods based on their calories abound – completely overlooking the real value of the food. Low calorie yogurts for example. Many contain so much sugar, fake sugar, and chemical flavorings, (“natural” flavorings? – are they kidding?) that the carb and sugar content are equal to the calorie count. OK, so it’s less than 100 calories, but has no food value, will spike your insulin momentarily making you more hungry, and contains chemicals that may continue “giving” for a long time. Plan to snack on good quality, real food. Plan ahead and have food with you that you know is good quality and agrees with you. Some of my favorite hunger busters when I’m on the move are chlorella or spirulina tabs (they work!), or a drop or 2 of peppermint or cinnamon bark essential oil – easy to carry around and will give you a real lift.

Forget calories, snacks, chlorella, spirulina, cinnamon bark essential oil.

Vote for the Future of Real Food

What real food IS hasn’t changed in 1000’s of years. Few of us would buy chemical cuisine, yet most is not labeled as such. Read labels carefully. When ingredients are printed so small you can’t see them, know that is intentional. Fake food is filled with “flavors and preservers” that will create new addictions, new health problems and new environmental fallout. When you choose real - organic food, you are keeping organic farmers in business and thereby sustaining the future of real food. Is it necessary to do battle with companies that are using all manner of cheap crap and toxic waste to “enhance” our food and drink? What if we all refused to buy inorganic and adulterated food? When we spend money, we are casting our ballot. When we “vote” for real food, we are supporting the future.
